Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for financing new ventures. Europe has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
