Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, not just his injury, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
