Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
