The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the major response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
